The history is in the walls – and the logo

Castbergkvartalet has a very special history – shaped by violinist and cultural builder Torgrim Castberg (1874–1928). After studying in Paris and Berlin, he came to Bergen as concertmaster in Harmoniens orchestra in 1900. In 1905, he established the Music Academy – Norway's first professional music education for children and youth outside Kristiania.

The success was immediate, and in 1913 Castberg built his own school building at Vestre Torggate 5–7, adapted for music education with soundproof walls and ceilings, as well as an orchestra hall and rehearsal rooms. With 20 teachers and 450 students at the time of moving in, the building quickly became a vibrant center for music and education – and had space for as many as 900 students. Castberg himself lived with his family in the top floor.

He also dreamed of a music college in Bergen – but it would take 60 years before Norway got its first, and it ended up in Oslo. After Castberg's sudden passing in 1928, the Music Academy continued in the building until 1946. Today, the legacy lives on through the Grieg Academy, part of the University of Bergen.

A visible symbol of this history can still be found in the building's stairwells: the original harp logo, a beautiful detail that has survived the test of time. In the ongoing rehabilitation, this will be preserved and reused, as a tribute to the building's musical heritage. As Castbergkvartalet rises again, it does so with respect for history – and with new energy for the future.

Easy access by public transport
The project has very good public transport coverage, with both bus and light rail stops just a four-minute walk away. With frequent departures, it is easy to get to and from the entire Bergen region. The new light rail route from Fyllingsdalen to the city center makes access even easier and more seamless.

Car and bicycle? No problem.
Parking needs are covered by nearby parking facilities – the closest is right under Hotel Norge at Ole Bulls plass. Additionally, you will find city bike parking just a minute's walk away, on Neumanns gate.

Here, at the foot of Nygårdshøyden, the building connects directly to the iconic church square via the charming church steps. The historic Vaskerelven – one of the city's oldest thoroughfares – stretches like a living axis from Engen to Olav Kyrres gate, right by the property.

BREEAM Certification and energy label Green B

Castbergkvartalet is facing a significant transformation, with ambitions to achieve a high BREEAM certification. BREEAM, or Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, is a leading global standard for sustainable building design, construction, and operation. It assesses buildings across several sustainability criteria, including energy consumption, water usage, and indoor environmental quality, to name a few.

Achieving a good BREEAM certification signals a significant commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability, while also contributing to reduced operating costs and an improved environment for users.

For Castbergkvartalet, this involves a series of measures aimed at energy efficiency, sustainable material use, and optimization of water and waste management, among others. These measures are not only important for meeting BREEAM's stringent criteria but also for ensuring that the building contributes positively to the local environment and community.

By striving for a high BREEAM certification, Castbergkvartalet commits to being at the forefront of sustainable development and setting a new standard for environmentally friendly construction projects in Bergen.
